Apple is expected to launch an iWatch, which will serve more as a home automation device than a smartwatch.

The company's arch rival, Samsung, has already released the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but currently it can only be integrated with the latest Galaxy Note 3. The company has announced that it will roll out a software update to its Android smartphones and tablet so that the Galaxy Gear can be integrated with them.

However, it seems that Apple has much bigger plans for the iWatch, which will allow its user to control various household devices with the help of the smartwatch.

"As an Apple supplier, our contact offered insight into the 'iWatch' and described this potential new device as much more than an extension of your iPhone but as a multi-purpose gateway in allowing consumers to control their home (i.e., heating/cooling, lights, audio, video, etc.)," said Brian White, an analyst with Cantor Fitzgerald.

Currently, TV's, home entertainment systems and more can be controlled using a smartphone or a tablet. The rumored iWatch may have the ability to control general household electronic gadgets as well as ability to control the heating and cooling of a house. Moreover, the iWatch may also control the lightning in your house.

The evolution of smart homes has already started and the iWatch may take us step forward. Home owners may be able to interconnect more electronic gadgets to the rumored iWatch.

Many market observers believe that the iWatch will not be just an iPhone companion and may provide an array of functionalities for its users.

Apple revolutionized the smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone and the tablet market with the revelation of the first iPad. The company has not yet confirmed its plans to launch iWatches; however, if rumors are to be believed then Apple may launch a 1.3-inch and a 1.6-inch iWatch in 2014. Both the smartwatches will have 320 x 320 resolution AMOLED displays, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Gear.

Customers will want to buy a smartwatch with which they can control various devices at home. However, Apple has not yet confirmed that it is working on such a device and it will be interesting to see when such a smartwatch will make its way to the shelves.
