The ultimate monster mashup film that will allow fans to see King Kong duke it out against Godzilla has officially received a 2020 release date.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures confirmed that Godzilla vs. Kong will hit theaters in five years after previous reports surfaced that plans were happening quickly to gain rights to the gigantic reptile from the rights holder Toho.

It will be the first time we see these two monsters meet on the big screen at the same time since the 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla.

The companies also announced the release dates of other monster movies it has in the works. Kong: Skull Island will be released on March 10, 2017, and Godzilla 2 will be released on June 8, 2018.

Kong: Skull Island will follow the origin story of the king of the apes and his dangerous home, as a team of explorers will venture deep inside the primordial island. Starring Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Hawkins as well as Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Toby Kebbell, John C. Reilly and Tom Wilkinson, the film will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by John Gatins and Max Borenstein.

The sequel to 2014's Godzilla that starred Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) will be directed by Gareth Edwards, written by Borenstein, and produced by Legendary with Mary Parent and Alex Garcia as executive producers.

"Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with Godzilla," Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara said in a statement. "It's great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn't get any bigger than this."

Of course, the highly anticipated Kong vs. Godzilla will round out the trilogy, but that may not be the last of the reinvention of these monster movies.

"Audiences really responded to Godzilla," Legendary CEO Thomas Tull said in a statement. "Today, I'm excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I've always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we're pleased to be announcing that and more."

Classic monsters like Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan may also be joining the Legendary-produced movies in the future.
