While you can’t argue with the quality of Marvel’s recent Star Wars comic book universe, there was a time when the House of Ideas wasn’t exactly doing the brand any favors.

Back when the company first held the license in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the books were treated as an afterthought, with countless oddball plots and storylines thrown around that flew in the face of what the first movie established, much to the dismay of George Lucas himself.

However, the most infamous of these additions to the Star Wars brand was the character of Jaxxon, the green-furred rabbit gunslinger that first appeared in Star Wars #8, all the way back in 1978. Basically, hating Jaxxon was a favorite pastime of Star Wars aficionados before Jar Jar came along to light the eternal flame of bitterness.

The character might not have sat well with Lucas, or fans for that matter, but nearly 40 years later, Marvel is ready to poke a little fun at itself by bringing Jaxxon back … kind of.

Jaxxon will appear on a variant cover for Star Wars: Vader Down #1, with Chip Zdarsky providing the art. The piece is a take on the iconic lightsaber duel between Luke and Vader from Empire, but with floppy ears replacing Mark Hamill’s boyish mop of hair. You can take a look at the cover below:

For those not in the know, here is how Marvel describes Vader Down, written by Jason Aaron, with art by Mike Deodato:

When Darth Vader accidentally finds himself facing off against the Rebel Fleet on his own, the Rebels will learn the true strength of the Dark Side of the Force! Once Vader crashes on a nearby planet, the Rebellion is willing to risk everything for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to take out one of their biggest enemies! Be there as this can’t miss crossover event begins in the oversized VADER DOWN #1 this November and continues in the pages of STAR WARS and DARTH VADER!
