This partnership brings together two firms with nearly three centuries of combined experience, embarking on a journey towards sustainable luxury with the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships.

Brunvoll Powers the Orient Express Silenseas

A renowned Norwegian engineering firm, Brunvoll, has been chosen as the propulsion supplier for the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships, which are poised to become the largest sailing vessels in the world.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable luxury at sea. 

Collaborating with Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Brunvoll will equip these majestic vessels with cutting-edge propulsion technology.

Brunvoll's propulsion system for the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships includes a twin-screw configuration and controllable pitch propellers.

These innovative features are meticulously designed to be fully feathered, effectively minimizing drag during sailing. 

This reduction in drag not only enhances the vessels' performance but also offers substantial benefits, such as reduced fuel consumption.

By curbing fuel usage, these advancements contribute to cost savings for operators and support environmental sustainability efforts by lowering emissions. 

Charting a Course for Sustainable Maritime Innovation

With an initial agreement for two ships and the potential for additional vessels, this collaboration signifies a commitment to advancing maritime technology while prioritizing eco-conscious practices on the open seas.

Brunvoll will provide its Thrust-OD box to drive the propellers through direct electric drive. This specialized box functions as a thrust bearing and incorporates a hydraulic system to manage the pitch of the propeller blade. 

Interesting Engineering reported that this configuration ensures precise control over the blade pitch, optimizing the performance of the ship's propulsion system.

The vessels will be propelled by a 25DF dual-fuel engine manufactured by Wärtsilä, capable of running on liquefied natural gas and primed for future compatibility with hydrogen. 

This strategic choice represents a significant stride towards fostering sustainability within the maritime sector. Project manager Yann Penduff emphasized the ships' design to prioritize environmental sustainability, aligning with industry standards.

Arnfinn Brautaset highlighted that this endeavor solidifies Brunvoll's position as a leader in propulsion design and efficiency.

He underscored the collaboration between Brunvoll's skilled hydrodynamicists and Chantiers de l'Atlantique in developing diverse propulsion solutions, furthering the advancement of maritime technology.

These grand vessels measure an impressive 721.7 feet (220 meters) in length and feature three towering sail masts reaching over 328 feet (100 meters) into the sky.

The sail surface area stretches 16,145 square feet (1,500 square meters). The Silenseas ships boast 54 cabins, offering luxurious accommodations for passengers.

In a significant development, the French government entered into a pact in March to explore wind-assisted ship propulsion technology.

This innovative approach holds promise for decarbonizing the shipping industry and aims to capture 30% of the global market share using French wind propulsion technology. 

Roland Lescure, the French Minister Delegate for Industry, highlighted the potential of developing the French sailing sector as a cornerstone for green reindustrialization.
