Everyone should know the benefits of flossing. Doing so can help prevent periodontal diseases, which have been linked to everything from heart problems to diabetes.

However, remembering to consistently floss every night is an entirely different story.

Flosstime hopes to change that. Having launched on Kickstarter with a $15,000 goal, Flosstime is a connected smart dental floss dispenser that gets mounted on a bathroom mirror to consistently help people care for their teeth. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Kickstarter campaign received over $11,000 toward its goal via 137 backers.

The way it works is simple. Press a button on the Flosstime unit and it will dispense 18 inches of floss — the recommended amount by the American Dental Association — with the device lighting up to flash a blue smile. Once the floss is dispensed, the unit gives users a 90-second flossing timer via a blue light that moves clockwise around Flosstime's circular ring.

If you fail to press the button to dispense any floss for several days, the unit lights up with an orange frown.

In the case of a shared bathroom, Flosstime has a dual-user feature that separates its light indicators into two parts, letting two people floss at the same time.

Thinking of kids and getting them into the healthy habit of flossing daily early on, the minds behind Flosstime created plastic snap-on frames — in the form of a frog, crab and goldfish — that clip onto the unit to make flossing more inviting.

A $17 early-bird pledge via its Kickstarter page will get you a Flosstime unit.
