The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the second best-selling smartphone with iPhone 5s occupying the first position. However, rumors suggest that Samsung's rumored Galaxy F smartphone will knock out the speculated iPhone 6.

Apple launched the iPhone 5s in September 2013 and since then the smartphone has become the best-selling smartphone in the market. Samsung Galaxy S5, unveiled in February this year, has been able to attract customers but is still trailing behind the iPhone 5s.

Based on a report published by Counterpoint Technology, an independent market research and consultancy firm, iPhone 5s has been the bestselling phone till May 2014. However, the company did not reveal the sales figures of the smartphones.

"According to Counterpoint's channel survey across 35 countries, Apple's iPhone 5s continues to be the bestselling phone in the world, a spot that many expected to be taken by Samsung's Galaxy S 5. The highly anticipated Galaxy S5 comes in at second place but still a quite distant number two in terms of (sell through) unit sales," per Counterpoint.

Rumors of the iPhone 6 have been flying thick and fast in the smartphone industry and Apple is expected to launch the next-generation smartphone in September this year. Speculations are high that the company will launch the iPhone 6 in two sizes: 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. The iPhone 6 is expected to be thinner and more powerful than its predecessors. The Apple handset is expected to be worthy to give competition to any other smartphone in the market.

Korean publication ETNews suggests that Samsung will launch a smartphone dubbed "Galaxy Alpha," which will be different than the Galaxy S series. ETNews suggests that the handset will launch in August this year, a month before the expected launch of iPhone 6.

"According to industry insiders on July 13, the Galaxy Alpha, which SEC [Samsung Electronics] will launch next month, is a premium smartphone made of a metal. It is forecast to counter the iPhone 6 scheduled to be released in September. It appears that SEC will rebound from its recent poor performance with a new smartphone lineup, not the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note Series," reports ETNews [translated].

Samsung usually launches the Galaxy S series in the first half of the year and the Galaxy Note series in the second half of the year. If rumors are correct, then either the Galaxy Alpha may replace Galaxy Note series or Samsung will launch the Galaxy Alpha and the next Galaxy Note phablet in a short span of time.

Rumors are also circling the smartphone industry about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, also known as Galaxy F, is expected to have a metal case. The Galaxy F is also expected to have a different design when compared to the Galaxy S5 and may have thinner bezels. It is anybody's guess if the Galaxy F and the Galaxy Alpha are the same device.

The Samsung and Apple rivalry is well-known in the smartphone industry. It will be interesting to see, which of the two smartphone makers are able to attract more customers with the launch of their new handsets in the near term.
