HTC expanded the availability of its mid-range Desire 728G Dual SIM smartphone, now launching the handset in India at Rs.17,990 (about $270).

As a mid-ranger, this handset doesn't come with any top-notch specifications, but it aims to deliver a feature-rich experience and great value for its price.

The HTC Desire 728 Dual SIM initially launched in China back in September, then expanded its availability under a slightly different name: Desire 728G Dual SIM. The smartphone recently launched in Germany and now it made its way to India, WhatsOnTech reported.

Interested customers can choose between two color options for the new HTC Desire mid-ranger: White Luxury and Purple Myst (which look more like black).

When it comes to specs, the handset has a 5.5-inch HD display (1280 x 720p) and packs an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor with 64-bit architecture running at 1.3GHz, with 1.5 GB of RAM to support it.

In terms of storage, the device has 16 GB of internal space, but allows for expandable memory of up to a whopping 2 TB. Other specs include a 13-megapixel main shooter with BSI sensor, LED flash and f/2.2 aperture, a 5-megapixel selfie camera, and a 2,800 mAh battery. On the software side, the handset comes with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on board.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 3G and Bluetooth 4.1. The smartphone also boasts HTC BoomSound speakers with Dolby Audio, delivering a quality audio experience.

That said, the lack of 4G support could turn out to be a major drawback for prospective customers, as even budged smartphones nowadays comes with 4G LTE connectivity. The mid-range segment has risen in recent times and more powerful specs are now available at affordable price points.

Moreover, the Indian market is in no shortage of mid-range devices, so it remains to be seen whether the HTC Desire 728G Dual SIM will be a strong competitor, especially considering that it's not the cheapest and it doesn't support 4G.

Other device makers are launching mid-range smartphones with better specifications at roughly the same price point as the HTC Desire 728G, which could limit the success of HTC's new offering. The expandable storage of up to 2 TB, however, could be its selling point.
