Over the past few years, footage and details about a cancelled Avengers video game have found their way online. From what little we've seen, the game looked cool, with Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Thor all being playable in first-person, battling it out with the evil Skrulls from the Marvel comics.

Thanks to the folks at DidYouKnowGaming?, we now have even more gameplay footage from the lost game to obsess over, as well as a number of previously-unknown details that make us want this game even more.

The game would have followed Marvel's Secret Invasion storyline fairly closely, though some changes would have been made for the game, written by Secret Invasion scribe Brian Michael Bendis himself. The game shifted from a third-person action game to a first-person one fairly early in development in an attempt to differentiate it from other similar action titles, and the title definitely succeeded in that department.

The folks at THQ Australia put an emphasis on four-player cooperative play, mimicking the teamwork the Avengers use in the films and comics. Players could chain together their attacks with teammates for combos, with each character having different strengths and weaknesses. The video reveals that Black Widow and Hawkeye would have been unlockable characters, along with War Machine and Captain Marvel.

In the end, the game wasn't cancelled because it wasn't shaping up nicely, but rather because of THQ's financial troubles. Development costs in Australia (where the teams developing the game were located) was high, and when THQ had to start cutting to stay afloat, the untitled Avengers game was the first to go.

Perhaps the saddest part of the whole story is that Marvel seemed unwilling to help in the wake of THQ's closure. According to the video, when the team attempted to pitch the game to Marvel in order to receive enough funding to continue working on the project, Marvel turned it down.

That was the last nail in the coffin for what looked to be a unique superhero game unlike any other. Since then, Marvel has doubled down on free-to-play and mobile titles, making the chances of seeing anything like this cancelled game in the future unlikely.
