If ordinary selfies have struck you as a bit passé of late, you may want to check out Phhhoto, a new iPhone app that turns your selfies into GIF-style masterpieces.

Created by Hyperhyper, a Brooklyn- and L.A.-based design and technology company, Phhhoto launched on Tuesday and already counts Katy Perry, Diplo and other social media tastemakers as users. The app takes a succession of quick pictures, photo-booth style, of whatever subject you are capturing and turns it into a GIF-like photo. The app features two filters, "Daze," which is the normal filter, and "Solo," which is a black-and-white option. Since the app's main purpose is to create beautiful, interesting shots, the creator's decision to only have two filter choices is a curious one.

The interface is very similar to Instagram's, featuring a social news feed, a Camera button and a "You" button, which acts as your profile. The app also allows you to "heart" and comment on your friends' posts. It also comes with your standard self-timer, flash options and front and back camera options.

But the app is not just for the selfie obsessed. When capturing a still life, the app is really a great tool for creating captivating visuals that look similar to stop-motion animation. The app, if used creatively, can elevate a mundane and straightforward shot to something aesthetically intriguing. We can see the app becoming extremely popular at venues with a lot of motion, such as concerts and parties. But the app would also be great for capturing that latte and moleskine set-up that you want to make a little less basic and a little more whimsical.
