BlackBerry has rolled out the first software update to the Android-powered BlackBerry Priv but it is not Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The update weighs only 475 MB and it improves the overall performance, security and stability of the handset. The software update also enhances the speed of the camera app.

Following the software update, owners of the BlackBerry Priv will notice that the speed of the camera app has increased. The update also re-tunes the camera app for better image quality in low-light conditions.

According to a BlackBerry blog, the software update will introduce a number of adjustments to the Priv, which are designed for improving the smartphone's reliability and reduce instances of freezing and crashing.

The latest update for the Priv includes December's security patches, which means that owners of the mobile phone should be rest assured that their device is protected against new security threats surrounding the Android operating system.

The software update for BlackBerry Priv will be available to handsets that were purchased directly from BlackBerry. Carrier versions of the BlackBerry smartphone will start getting the software update starting Dec. 7.

Customers should get a notification when they receive the software update. Owners of the BlackBerry Priv can also check their device's "Settings -> About -> System Updates" and then tap on "Check for Updates" to see if their Priv has received the update.

Once the update file is downloaded and installed, the handset will automatically restart to complete the installation process. BlackBerry recommends that customers should be connected to a Wi-Fi network while downloading the update to avoid unwanted data charges.

Normally, smartphones should have at least 50 percent of battery charge before installing a software update.

BlackBerry announced the slider phone in September this year and it hit the shelves in early November. The BlackBerry offering comes running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop straight out of the box. The Canadian company has not confirmed a tentative release date of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Priv but rumors suggest that that the new Android operating system will arrive sometime in 2016.

For now, Priv owners will have to keep themselves satisfied with the latest software update and wait for BlackBerry to confirm Android 6.0 Marshmallow release date for the smartphone.
