Speed is everything. Comcast makes a move to stay at the top of its game by boosting internet speeds for residential customers in California, Kansas. Texas and Missouri.

Specifically, three Xfinity Internet tiers will be receiving speed boosts. From 25 Mbps, "Performance" will go up to 50 Mbps, while "Blast" will jump from 50 Mbps to 105 Mbps. The "Extreme 105" which offers 105 Mbps before the upgrade will be updated to 150 Mbps.

All customers in California will be enjoying double their internet speeds from Comcast except for those in Rio Vista, Lodi, Isleton, Scotts Valley, Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. Those in Olathe in Kansas, Houston in Texas and Independence in Missouri will also benefit from the upgrade.

"We continue to deliver the fastest speeds to the most homes so our customers can have a terrific online experience. Whether it's streaming video, gaming or just surfing the web, customers need an Internet provider that can deliver speed and reliability," said Eric Schaefer, General Manager and Senior Vice President for Comcast's Data and Communications Services of the upgrade.

Speed increases will be automatically implemented within the next few days but customers who can't wait can simply restart their modems. Customers who will need to upgrade modems to take advantage of the speed boosts will be contacted.

Comcast is also realizing the importance of wireless internet access and so most service tiers will be offering complimentary XFinity Wi-Fi access. Comcast already has 3.6 million hotspots but hopes to bring that number up to eight million by the time the year ends.

In the last 12 years, Comcast has boosted internet speeds for its customers 13 times. Before California, Kansas, Texas and Missouri, it's last upgrade was in April for Washington, D.C. and 14 states.

This most recent speed upgrade comes while Comcast is still in talks for a merger with Time Warner Cable. "Together, Comcast and TWC will bring millions of consumers the next-generation of broadband Internet, video, voice, and related technologies. And by combining the companies' technological developments and know-how, their geographic reach, and Comcast's strong balance sheet and investment culture, the post-transaction company will improve the experience for customers today and forge ahead to meet future challenges and needs," writes Comcast's Chief Diversity Officer and Executive Vice President, David L. Cohen, in a statement in April.
