There are now more than 2 million retail locations that support Apple Pay, with more to come.

Apple announced that its mobile payment service is now accepted in 2 million locations worldwide. This number is bound to go higher as other establishments will soon be rolling out support for Apple Pay. These include Chick-Fil-A, Au Bon Pain and Crate & Barrel.

More and more online merchants are also making a switch to mobile app payments. Zappos, an online retailer of shoes and clothes, said that it is looking at integrating Apple Pay in its payment system.

The move was confirmed by Jay Yarow of Business Insider in a tweet.

"Apple Pay adding Chick-Fil-A restaurants, Zappos.com to service."

Apple also noted that as far as increasing compatibility is concerned, the company already surpassed its goal to gain support to Apple Pay from 1.5 million retailers toward the end of 2015.

Purchase volume also increased more than twice in the latter part of 2015 as compared to the first half of the year.

In December, Apple and Union Pay entered a partnership with the aim of launching Apple Pay to China. If this pushes through, China UnionPay users will be able to use the mobile payment service through their Apple devices for a more convenient and safer way of shopping.

"Apple Pay has revolutionized the way millions of people pay every day with their iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad," said Eddy Cue, senior VP of Internet Software and Services at Apple. "China is an extremely important market for Apple and with China UnionPay and support from 15 of China's leading banks, users will soon have a convenient, private and secure payment experience."

However, there are still a lot of consumers who are hesitant to use their devices in making their payments at retail establishments. Moreover, a number of terminals don't have support to Apple Pay just yet.

Apple is looking into ways to boost the adoption of Apple Pay in the U.S. as well, where most people are still reluctant to evolve from swipe credit card payment system.

Starbucks announced that it is expanding its support to Apple Pay sometime in 2016. Other stores such as KFC, Chili's, Dominos and Cinnabon are also expected to roll out Apple Pay support to their locations this year.
