Remember Descent? The cult-hit game from the 1990s that was deemed "The Doom Killer"?

Well, it's back and taking the famed six-degree-of-freedom shooting action to the next level with modern day graphics and gameplay.

Doom, which was the game in town that time, was never really killed by Descent, but the latter did make a name for itself nonetheless. It featured the same Doom-like corridor-type first person shooter experience, but with the twist of being able to freely move around a zero-G environment.

This latest reincarnation of Descent is called Overload. Though it doesn't share the same name as the classic, it is made by the original creators and developers of the first game. The follow-ups to the original Descent back then were good sequels, but not by the original development team.

Hoping to provide an experience exactly just like the original Descent from 1995, the 2016 version also has twisted corridors, robot enemies, and the classic seek-destroy-escape objectives. The look of the game, of course, will be updated to match modern times with more effective lighting and fancier smoke effects, but the level layout constructed in multiple cube-shaped building blocks will remain.

But it's not out just yet. Overload's makers have created a Kickstarter campaign to bring the game to life. Out of a $300,000, more than $40,000 has been raised so far with 28 days still to go in the campaign, as of writing.

Overload promises to bring back the heart and soul of Descent since it's coming from the hands and minds of those who first created the franchise. It's Kickstarter campaign asks supporters for just $25 to receive a digital edition of Overload. Higher monetary support gives backers downloadable copies of the soundtrack, concept art, their names on the credits, and more up to a "launch day bonanza" for an $8,000 pledge.

There was another Descent game successfully funded before on Kickstarter. It was called Descent: Underground. The game barely met its $600,000 goal, and was developed by a team that had no connection whatsoever with the original game.
