Imagine this: it's London in the year 1918, and you find yourself roaming the streets, consumed by an eternal thirst for blood, a newly formed predator left behind after a lethal outbreak of the Spanish flu. Although you are thirsty beyond measure, you must carefully choose your prey, because every choice you make, every death you create, affects the world around you.

This is the world of Vampyr, the new title from game development studio Dontnod, who gave us last year's Life Is Strange. Vampyr promises to offer a dark, atmospheric gaming experience where players become heavily invested in vampire mythology.

Dontnod recently released the first set of screenshots from Vampyr, showing off the turn-of-the-century London environments that players will wander through as a creature of the night.

Vampyr takes place shortly after World War I, after a bout of Spanish flu devastates the city, leaving survivors open to becoming prey to vampires. The player takes on the role of a doctor recently turned into a vampire as he works to understand this powerful new affliction while dealing with a deadly thirst for blood.

"As you cling to what remains of your humanity, your decisions will ultimately shape the fate of your hero while searching for answers in the coughing, foggy aftermath of the Spanish Flu," Dontnod writes in a press email.

Players will also take part in combat and use skill trees to customize combat styles, using combinations of crafted weapons and special vampire abilities.

"There will be times when exploration and seduction will only get you so far, and you'll need to resort to engaging in Vampyr's dynamic, melee-focused real-time combat," Dontnod writes. "It blends hard-hitting melee combat with supernatural vampire powers. Find and loot materials and components from the fresh corpses of your victims or during exploration, in order to craft and improve tools, melee and ranged weapons, as well as special ammunitions and coating to exploit the weaknesses of your enemies."

Vampyr doesn't have a release date yet, aside from a general 2017, but expect it to turn up on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.
