Watch out, New York City, a new superhero is in town, and she isn't about to let the citizens of New York go defenseless against bad beer.

Going by the name Brooklyn Defender, the character is a brand new creation from comic book artist Amy Reeder that embodies the new Brooklyn Defender beer that will serve as the official beer of New York Super Week and New York Comic-Con in October.

The beer and superhero come thanks to a collaboration between pop culture event organizer ReedPOP and the Brooklyn Brewery. This will be the third year the two organizations have collaborated to introduce New York to a brand new character and new beer recipe, and the first time the beer's mascot is a female. Brooklyn Brewery started with founder Steve Hindy brewing beer in his apartment before partnering with his neighbor Tom Potter in 1988 to create the local brewery.

"Brooklyn Brewery's creation and Amy's creativity bring beer and comics together in a way that encompasses pop culture, the city of New York and the week's events," Lance Festerman, global senior vice president for ReedPOP says.

The beer will land in New York City on Sept. 10 at a release party and then move on to select bars and restaurants across the city during New York Super Week from Oct. 3-12, which then leads into New York Comic Con from Oct. 9-12.

"This year's Brooklyn Defender is an IPA as red as the setting sun, as brisk as a tornado and as refreshing as Amy Reeder's ink style," Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery says in a press release. "We incorporated some German red malts that give the beer the slightest edge of roast and a suggestion of caramel, and the explosive Mosaic hop steps out front with the aromatics."

As for the Brooklyn Defender character herself, she embodies the New York attitude and is a perfect match for the beer's unique flavor.

"The new Brooklyn Defender packs quite a punch," Reeder says, whose previous work can be seen in issues of Supergirl, Batwoman and Rocket Girl. "She's your neighborhood vigilante hero: everything about her screams 'homemade' and 'homegrown.' A boxing and wrestling champ in her own right, the Brooklyn Defender decided her skills were needed on the streets to defend beer and all those who stand behind it!"

No doubt New York Comic-Con attendees will be working up quite the thirst as they scurry from event to event, and when that happens, the Brooklyn Defender will be there to help.
