People who have a Nest thermostat at home or at the office can now control the temperature of their rooms using Amazon's Alexa voice command system. This can be done by linking their smart heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control to their own Amazon account through the accompanying Alexa mobile app.

After integrating the voice command system to your thermostat, it will be able to handle any adjustments to the cooling or heating of your room either through an Echo speaker, an Amazon Dot and Tap, or a Fire TV that has an updated firmware.

If the temperature of a room is too hot for your liking, you can simply have it lowered by asking Alexa to take it down a notch. The system will then send a command to the Nest thermostat to lower the temperature. The same goes for when you want to make the room warmer on particularly cold days.

Alexa is programmed to respond to a wide range of voice commands, ranging from general tasks to fairly specific ones.

Homeowners who have more than one Nest thermostat in their home can still use the voice control system to adjust the temperature in a given room. This can be done by telling Alexa which particular room you want the temperature reduced or increased.

If you weren't able to give Alexa the specific thermostat name you wished to be adjusted, the smart system will have to double-check the command for clarification.

In cases when the Nest thermostat is set to "Away" mode or it is in "Auto-Away" mode, Alexa won't be able to take control of the HVAC system. Voice commands also won't work if the Nest thermostat is in "Emergency Heat" or if it underwent an "Emergency Shutoff".

Developers of the Alexa system are working on creating voice-controlled macros that would let owners use more commands.

For example, Alexa will automatically lower the temperature in your home by telling her that you're stepping outside for a while. You can also have her increase the temperature in a room by simply telling her that you feel too cold.
