Netflix will start filming scenes for its Marvel The Defenders series in 2016.

This news comes courtesy of Daredevil star Charlie Cox while speaking at a recent press event for Netflix in Paris.

The Defenders will see the entire Netflix/Marvel universe come together as an alternative to the Avengers team. In the comic books, the Defenders, though, are more of the anti-Avengers, a group of outcast superheroes and vigilantes who come together occasionally to fight crime and take care of bad guys, although most of the individuals on the team have their own agendas. The Defenders don't have a headquarters, usually don't get along with each other and often don't answer to any one person.

"What we do know is at the end of this year we're going to be making The Defenders and, of course, Daredevil is very much a part of that foursome," Cox said, as reported by the Independent. "I have no idea what the storyline is going to be for that show. I'm very excited to see how those worlds combine ... and interested to see tonally how those shows become one."

The Defenders will bring together Netflix's Marvel superheroes, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. So far, though, there aren't many more details available about the series other than that.

"So with The Defenders, I know we're going to do it, I have no idea who's going to be showrunning it, I don't know what the story's going to be, I don't know — other than the four Defenders, I don't know what the characters are going to be involved in it," Cox previously said at Wizard World St. Louis several weeks ago.

Unfortunately, that also means that no one knows if Daredevil will get a third season, or when Jessica Jones might get a second season. The first season of Netflix's Luke Cage series debuts this fall, with Iron Fist currently in production.

Netflix had plans all along to bring together its Marvel characters for The Defenders and laid the groundwork for that with the first season of Daredevil. Fans can probably expect The Defenders series to premiere in late 2017 or 2018, sometime after Iron Fist's first season.
