More than just battling it out for the biggest screens, monitors are about display quality. But just when 4K displays have started to settle in, Dell decides that resolution quality is not going to cut it anymore, teasing with a 5K monitor, the UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD.

What's a 5K monitor? It's one that comes with a 5,120 x 2,880 resolution, the first in the world according to Dell. Specifically, the UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K monitor features a resolution that is four times what QHD can offer and up to seven times better than full HD.

Dell's 5K monitor also takes advantage of PremierColor technology that offers highly realistic accuracy with colors and pristine quality in pictures for those who need to be critical with colors for work. An anti-reflective/anti-smudge edge-to-edge glass construction complements PremierColor for better results.

Fitted with a couple of 16W Harman Kardon speakers, the UltraSharp Ultra HD 5K monitor also offers immersive acoustics for work and play, while productivity is optimized thanks to the inclusion of a media card reader and six USB ports that will allow users to hook the monitor up with a range of peripherals.

Given the 5K monitor's resolution, PPI measurement comes out at 218, translating to 14.7 million pixels. With pixels per inch of that level, the UltraSharp 27 HD is like a larger 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro or twice what the ASUS Zenbook UX301 is capable of.

The UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K monitor is beautiful but it appears no-frills so it easy to assume that it is more intended for professionals. However, with a resolution like that, it will undoubtedly make game graphics more delicious, making the monitor a very attractive offering to gaming enthusiasts. However, a major graphics card upgrade may be in order to fully take advantage of what this monitor is capable of.

"Dell is continuing to emphasize a customer promise to create the most secure and manageable environments. Each of these areas is a critical component for any IT department, but so is the need to satisfy the user. Dell has wrapped its core IT strengths with new thoughtfully designed and attractive products geared for enhanced productivity in a variety of customer use cases," said Moor Insight & Strategy principal analyst, president, and founder Patrick Moorhead.

The 27-inch Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K monitor will be available towards the end of the year, retailing for $2,499.99.
