The next generation iPhone 7 may not come with a Smart Connector after all, if the latest news from Japan turn out to be accurate.

Apple first introduced a Smart Connector with its high-end iPad Pro tablet, purported to be powerful enough to replace your computer. That Smart Connector is a new port designed for power and data transfer between the tablet and various accessories such as the Smart Keyboard.

Not too long ago, leaks indicated that Apple would also equip its upcoming smartphones, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, with the same Smart Connector. Although it was a bit curious just what functions a Smart Connector would offer an iPhone, some potential applications that were speculated included wireless charging, battery cases and the likes.

However, Japanese publication Mac Otakara now indicates that Apple may have changed its mind and ultimately decided not to pack a Smart Connector into its next generation iPhones.

It all remains unclear at this point, especially since it's all based on speculation and Apple never confirmed such plans in the first place. The previous rumors that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus would sport Smart Connectors were based on a leaked image, but it's uncertain whether that image was of an actual iPhone 7, a dummy unit based on schematics, or simply a knockoff unrelated to the actual product.

The new information from Mac Otakara does not contradict previous rumors hinting at Apple plans for a Smart Connector to grace the new iPhones, but says that after careful consideration, Apple eventually decided to ditch the feature.

It remains unclear which of the rumors, if any, are accurate. We're still months away from the iPhone 7 unveiling and plenty of uncertainties cloud the picture. Various conflicting details hit the scene as well, so it's tough to tell just what exactly to expect from the 2016 iPhone.

The final features and design may be notably different from what we've heard so far, so make sure to take all leaks and speculation with a hefty grain of salt.
