Halloween is just around the corner and, for geeks, that means a lot of time and consideration spent on coming up with the perfect nerdy costume. However, if you're not a cosplayer and don't have a lot of experience with things like sewing and crafting, the idea of a homemade costume is overwhelming.

Never fear, though. You can now easily create a perfectly geeky and wonderfully scary costume: a BioShock splicer.

In the BioShock video games, splicers are those people left over in Rapture that have pumped themselves so full of genetic mutations that they're not just insane, but also frightening and will attack on sight. They're usually dressed up, covered in blood and look tattered. So putting together their look is simple.

Your first step is to hit eBay or thrift shops and find the perfect outfit. For ladies, a cocktail dress you don't mind ripping to shreds is perfect. For men, a simple pair of slacks and a shirt, vest and tie are what you're looking for. The outfit itself doesn't need to be specific, but if you're doing budget costuming, the rule is that cheaper is better.

Now that you have your outfit, it's time to rough it up a bit. Grab scissors and use the sharp edge to start tiny rips in your outfit, wherever you like. Make it seem random, or give it a pattern, but make that outfit look like it's been through a fight. Make sure the edges are ripped and frayed, too. Cut out holes, rip necklines and even tear off sleeves.

Ladies, don't forget to rip your pantyhose and tights. In fact, cut off a whole leg of your stockings for a better effect.

You can also rip up and scratch your shoes (as long as they're not a good pair). The idea here is to look ragged.

Next, you'll need a mask. The good news is that the typical bloody rabbit mask from BioShock is readily available via eBay and Etsy at pretty much every price point. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, make your own, as shown in the video below:

You can also make your own blood and there are recipes available on the Internet. However, Ruby's Vampire Blood spray makes for a better impression: not only does it splatter nicely, but it also lasts a long time, and easily washes off. You'll want to put on your entire costume and spray splatters all over, making it look like you've recently given someone a good bludgeoning.

You'll also want props. In BioShock, splicers often have weapons, which range from lengths of pipe to hooks to rolling pins. Grab whatever you have on hand and spray it down with blood, too.

Finally, ladies, don't forget make-up, especially if you plan on not wearing your mask regularly while in costume. Make it look smeared with lots of lipstick all over the place and smudgy lined eyes with mascara running from them.

That's all there is to it. Just have fun with the costume details and you'll be a scary BioShock splicer in no time.

Trick or treat!
