Apple has just launched its first major update to iOS 10 with the release of iOS 10.1. The update includes major bug fixes and introduces a new "Portait" mode, which takes advantage of the iPhone 7 Plus' dual rear cameras.

When Apple launched the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September, the smartphones were the first devices to ship with iOS 10 out of the box. The company played up the dual rear camera setup of the iPhone 7 Plus and its ability to capture images with a depth effect that is able to keep the subject sharp while creating a blurred background. This feature was not available at launch and was promised to make its way to the iPhone 7 Plus with a software update.

The "Portrait" mode update for the iPhone 7 Plus would arrive with the release of iOS 10.1 and Apple allowed developers and public beta testers to try it out in beta versions of iOS 10.1. We recently reported that an app called FabFocus promised to bring the iPhone 7 Plus' blur feature to older iPhones and the app was finally released on the App Store.

Apple has just announced that it has officially released iOS 10.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as an OTA (over-the-air) update, which can be downloaded now via supported iOS 10 devices and through iTunes. iOS 10.1 runs on iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad 4th generation, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro 9.7 inch, iPad Pro 12.9 inch and iPod touch 6th generation.

Apple's iOS 10.1 Release Notes confirm that the new Portrait Camera for iPhone 7 Plus is included in the update, along with several fixes in the Camera and Photos applications. Maps has received transit support for train, subway, ferry and bus systems in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Sign-based transit navigation of all underground structure and walkways connecting large transit stations is included, as well as transit fare comparison.

Messages now allow users to replay bubble and full screen effects and fixes issues that would sometimes lead to contact names displaying incorrectly. Apple Watch app now adds distance and average pace to workout summaries in the Activity app, fixes issues when syncing Music playlists and resolving issues that caused some third party apps to crash when inputting text.

Apple listed a complete rundown of all the improvements and fixes in iOS 10.1.
