There are a number of viral videos showing the New Zealand sky during a 7.8M earthquake. There are lights that appear in the skies during the natural phenomenon, which has raised the interest of the online communities interested in alien activities.

The video that was uploaded on YouTube has already raised over 480,000 views, and it depicts the skies over Christchurch on Sunday, Nov. 13, the night when the earthquake occurred.

There are numerous comments on the video, and most of the people confirm having seen the lights as well during the most intense parts of the earthquake.

Viral Phenomenon

The video was featured by numerous media sources, who acknowledge that it might have been possible. However, most of these sources dismiss the hypothesis and has raised the UFOlogists' interests, saying that it is really entirely possible for a phenomenon like this to have taken place during an earthquake.

Among the comments posted on the YouTube video, some came from journalists who were interested in the story, asking for the contact information of the person on whose account the video was posted.

Earthquake Lights - Divided Opinions

Most of the people who commented on the video actually confirmed having seen the lights during the earthquake.

Some of the people who posted comments explained that they were, in fact, terrified of the phenomenon for which they had no explanation whatsoever.

Other comments, however, dismissed the hypothesis of an extraterrestrial phenomenon taking place in New Zealand, explaining that there was a similar occurrence during a 2011 earthquake, which had been scientifically explained. Thus, the opinions on the matter are profoundly divided, most of the people who commented seeking to confirm their own hypotheses.

Additionally, there was a research published in the science journal Seismological Research Letters, which explained that the phenomena are merely the result of a positive charge, which seems to be generated with the stress gradients that accumulate on the ground's surface during the earthquakes. The results of this charge are powerful emitting plasma-based color images, which can be interpreted as anything but an extraterrestrial phenomenon.

Factually speaking, there was a 7.5M earthquake in Canterbury, followed by a series of powerful lights in the sky. As a result of the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued, but it was raised no longer afterward.

While the bizarre phenomenon is still explained by each category of audience in agreement with their previous beliefs, it is true that future research on the topic could bring more clarity to this matter, which seems to have divided the opinions of people browsing the internet.
