Samsung has launched a special version of the Galaxy S8 that is inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The smartphone was created in celebration of the upcoming release of the fifth movie in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Samsung Galaxy S8, 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Edition

The Pirates of the Caribbean edition of the Samsung Galaxy S8 was first spotted on Chinese social website Weibo, with details about the device then surfacing at the MyDrivers website.

The smartphone comes in a specially designed box that mimics a treasure chest that contains the standard Samsung Galaxy S8, a wireless charging dock, and a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed clip-on case.

The clip-on case, which bears the skull made popular by the franchise at the back with its logo, is actually a smart case with NFC capabilities. When the case is attached to the Samsung Galaxy S8, it will connect to the smartphone through NFC and apply a special Pirates of the Caribbean theme to the device. Once the smartphone is removed from the case, the theme will also disappear.

Samsung has not yet officially announced the Samsung Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition, but given the fifth movie's fast approaching release date, the company will likely make the announcement soon.

The special version of the Samsung Galaxy S8 will cost 300 Chinese yuan, or about $44, more than the regular price of the smartphone. It will go on sale in China next month, with no information yet on whether it will also be sold in the United States and on what date.

Samsung Teams Up With Disney Again

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition is not the first time that Samsung teamed up with Disney to launch a special version of one of its smartphones. Back in May 2015, Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man edition, which was created in partnership with Disney-owned Marvel.

The Iron Man edition of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge did not come with any new specifications or features, as it only offered a superficial upgrade. The smartphone came in bright red and gold, similar to the superhero's iconic armor, and was sold with a matching wireless charging pad that looked like Iron Man's arc reactor and a specially designed case. The smartphone, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition, came with a custom user interface.

Samsung also previously teamed up with Marvel's rival, DC, and Warner Bros. for the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition, which featured Batman's logo at the back of the smartphone. The device was decked out in black and gold, and came with a gold-plated Batarang, a black Samsung Gear VR, a special phone case, a Batman-inspired theme, and a preinstalled copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

While these two special editions changed the looks of the smartphones, Samsung was more conservative with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition. The included smartphone in the bundle is a regular one, with the customization only applied through the NFC case.
