August 2016 will see the first gathering of DC Comics' Suicide Squad on the big screen, as the third movie in the company's shared cinematic universe. As a team of six villains coerced into black ops missions for the government, Suicide Squad seems like an odd choice for so early an entry. But since it's happening so near the beginning of DC's big-screen adventures, there's every chance Warner Bros. could order up a sequel — especially if this one does well.

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jared Leto as Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. With that said, we're not sure who the actual villains will be in the movie (outside of the members of the Squad themselves), but here's who we'd like to see.

1. The Crime Syndicate

Okay, this one's a longshot, but it's also the juiciest idea of all. This super villain team from an alternate universe is comprised of evil versions of the familiar Justice League of America. The "Crime Syndicate of America" consists of Ultraman (evil Superman), Superwoman (Wonder Woman), Owlman (Batman), Johnny Quick (Flash) and Power Ring (Green Lantern).

It'll never happen, but seeing our team of bad-guys-doing-black-ops-for-good go up against wicked doppelgangers of their own archenemies would lead to some cathartic fun for the Squad. And it would also give us our first excuse ever to root against Clark Kent, Diana Prince, Bruce Wayne, etc.

2. Lex Luthor

Here's a character that's a very real possibility. In fact, it's already been rumored that the new Lex, Jesse Eisenberg, may appear or at least cameo in Suicide Squad. It remains to be seen how Eisenberg's take on Superman's archnemesis will shake out, but assuming it goes well, why not put him at the center of Suicide Squad?

The industrial espionage angle against LuthorCorp has been mined repeatedly, but never on the big screen. Besides, seeing a group of characters fighting Lex, who, under different circumstances might team up with him, could lead to some very interesting dramatic possibilities.

3. Deathstroke

In some ways, he's the most dangerous villain in the DC Universe. He's like Captain America without morals: an enhanced super-soldier who's adept at every form of combat known to man, he's unabashedly evil yet he abides by his own code of honor. He's literally unkillable. Best of all, he's a villain who pops up all throughout the DCU, never associated with just one superhero.

The Suicide Squad taking on Deathstroke would be different than facing down any other DCU villain, because he's a samurai, a Spartan, and a medieval knight rolled into one. He may not be a high-powered metahuman, but he's quite possibly the greatest warrior who ever lived.

4. Black Adam

Adam is a dark horse candidate because it's been said that the Shazam movie will not share a continuity with all of the other DC movies. That said, Black Adam is an indestructible, megalomaniacal ruler possessing powerful abilities, singular focus and an iron will. He will not hesitate to do what he thinks is right — even though it may be devastatingly wrong for the rest of the world — and he has the strength to do it. How would a team of super villains take on such a god-like figure? No idea, but we'd love to find out.

5. Amanda Waller

The Machiavelli of the DC Universe, Waller is the mastermind behind the Suicide Squad who gives them their marching orders. (Viola Davis was just cast as her.) As an operative for the shadowy government organization Checkmate, she has the contacts and resources at her disposal to do almost anything.

Oh, and did we mention that her morals are flexible? Waller has this pesky tendency to do things in the name of the U.S. government that are secretly to further her own ambitions.

A team of operatives going up against the person who put them together? That's a no-brainer. In fact, it sounds like a plot right out of a comic book.
