Apple stores in Japan are shaping up for Fukubukuro sales (mystery bag or lucky bag) on January 2, 2014.

Fukubukuro is a Japanese New Year's Day custom when merchants make grab bags that are filled with random items and sell them for a substantial discount, which can reach around 50 percent or more off the list price of the items contained within the bag. Apple (Japan) website has now confirmed that it will participate in the Fukubukuro sales next year.

In 2013, seven Apple stores in Japan offered the mystery bags to customers on January 2, and in 2014, all seven stores will again be selling the mystery bags.

Apple has priced its mystery bags at 36000 yen (approximately $343). The lucky bags usually contains items such as iPods, headphones, or accessories. Some lucky customers will also hit big time and get a Macbook or an iPad, which makes the bag a steal. And, thanks to the launch of iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad Air, Retina iPad mini and the Mac Pro in 2013, Apple fans stand to win even more.

The numbers of mystery bags are usually limited, so customers who want to grab the lucky bags will definitely have to line up in front of the participating Apple stores. The offer is not available for purchase on Apple online store.

However, be warned - as customers do not know what they exactly they are paying for, the content inside some bags may also bring disappointment. One person can buy only one lucky bag and the product inside the lucky bag cannot be exchanged unless there is a hardware or accessories defect.

The sale starts at 8 am in the morning on January 2, 2014.
