The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones from Apple are quite the rage, but it seems that come 2015, the company is gearing to up the ante with an iPhone 6S mini.

Apple is allegedly looking to release not two but three iPhones next year! That's correct. According to Timothy Arcuri, an analyst at Cowen and Company, Apple is working on a 4-inch model of the iPhone which it will likely release in 2015.

Arcuri mentioned this in a note to investors and AppleInsider managed to lay its hands on a copy of the same.

"According to Arcuri, it's 'possible' that Apple could launch three new versions of the iPhone next year, with a so-called 'iPhone 6s mini' at 4 inches joining the current-generation screen sizes," reveals AppleInsider.

Arcuri cited reliable informants within Apple's supply chain as his sources and also divulges that the 4-inch iPhone 6S mini will be pretty similar to the iPhone 5S, which was released in 2013. However, the iPhone 6S mini may sport a novel design and the edges of the device's screen could be curved like its iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 siblings.

Moreover, the smartphone may pack the powerful A9 processor. Arcuri has also revealed that the iPhone 6S mini will use "purpose-built low cost components" likely from Qualcomm to keep the price of the device minimal.

Even though Apple deviated from the 4-inch form factor when it launched the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, as well as the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, the firm may return to the original size for the impending iPhone 6S mini, which is anticipated to be a low-end smartphone and may replace the iPhone 5C.

While Apple releases two smartphones every year since 2013, 2015 may be a different ball game together and consumers could be looking at three devices - the iPhone 6S mini, the iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus.

This is not the first time rumors pertaining to the release of a 4-inch iPhone from Apple have popped up. Earlier in December, Feng - a Chinese publication - claimed that Apple intended to release a 4-inch smartphone as a replacement for the iPhone 5S.

Whether Apple will release the alleged iPhone 6S mini in the first half of 2015 or along with the successors of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6Plus is a million dollar question.
