PlayStation's sci-fi horror roguelite hit Returnal is potentially getting a new DLC coming next week. According to sources close to the development and internal PlayStation happenings, Housemarque will be dropping updated content and more for the PS5 breakout experience.

What specifically the DLC will entail remains cloudy, as the information is still quite scarce. Various rumors have, however, been long circulating since November of last year, with much of the actual content speculation circulating on a whole new world to be explored apart from Atropos. Returnal DLC could even entail the introduction of a new playable character, depending on how exactly Housemarque will want to take the experience next.

Following its official debut in late April last year, Returnal was met with astounding acclaim. It won Best Action Game in The Game Awards and was nominated for both Audio Design and Studio/Game Direction. Given its PS5 exclusive nature, Returnal featured brilliant DualSense haptic feedback concepts, which put players right into the action via sophisticated controller vibrations, like rain water tip-tapping on the player and surface of the ground.

Despite the immense success, it wasn't without some complaints, as the no-saving nature of its roguelite framework turned many gamers off from its auspices, yet Housemarque alleviated woes with a standby function by allowing gamers to put the PS5 into rest mode without hindering their progress. For those unaware, a roguelite is a type of continuous gameplay parameter that pits the gamer on a quest through a series of oftentimes unending dungeons that grow harder each cycle.

The esteem awarded Returnal gave sway to Housemarque, a little-known studio that made previous games like Resogun and Dead Nation - nothing in the guise and scope of Returnal. The success of this breakout PS5 exclusive even spurred PlayStation to buy the studio outright, proving the hardworking and determined internal nature of the studio.

Thus, many fans across the internet voiced their optimism and prayers for a Returnal DLC, wherein more of its brilliant yet dark universe could be fleshed out in fuller detail with the overall narrative only expounding. Most specifically, the character of Selene could do well with more background, as even Returnal's secret ending does little in fleshing out the entirety of her story.

What form specifically Returnal's DLC will take still remains all but a mystery, but given Housemarque's track record so far with the base experience and the various teases that have cropped up since its debut, it'll surely be otherworldly content. At least fans won't have to wait long before Housemarque and PlayStation voice the forthcoming release slated for next week.
