The European Union officially made the USB-C type port a standard for all the devices last week. This will take effect in 2024.

The mandatory implementation could soon be applicable in the US, as well, as senators want to pass this and adopt the same policy that the EU will roll out in the next two years.

The US senators want to implement the common charger law recently passed by the EU. Could this mean that Apple will use a USB-C port for its future iPhones?

According to the latest report by 9to5Mac, the US senators have penned a letter about making the USB-C charging a requirement in the country.

Signed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ed Markey, the letter says that the country has been lacking an "interoperability standard" when it comes to consumer electronics.

According to three senators, this contributes to environmental deterioration and poor e-waste management.

As such, the lawmakers want to address this issue by emulating what the EU has passed recently. In doing so, they believe that it would lessen e-waste and "restore sanity" when buying electronic gadgets.

Apple's Lightning Port Drives More E-waste

As an example, the trio of senators pointed out Lightning Port, made by Apple. According to them, this is clearly an example of "planned obsolescence," which contributes to the "proliferation" of e-waste.

As a result, they want to push the common charger law into reality and copy the EU as an example.

Since many chargers are currently available for different devices, one has to search for one option that's compatible with the device. If the law is passed, this will avoid the unnecessary usage of various chargers when charging a gadget.

"We urge you to coordinate with offices and agencies across the Department of Commerce to develop a comprehensive plan that will protect both consumers and the environment by addressing the lack of a common U.S. charging standard. We cannot allow the consumer electronics industry to prioritize proprietary and inevitably obsolete charging technology over consumer protection and environmental health," the letter concludes.

Could We See USB-C-Enabled iPhone Next Year?

Previously, Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo said that the USB-C transition could happen in iPhone 15. He predicted that the Cupertino firm would finally ditch the Lightning port.

It seems that this bold claim is on the verge of happening, given that the EU has signaled a green pass for the common charger law.

Apple has been on a controversial take on this issue. With the EU's stance on rolling out the universal charger to all devices, the company could possibly implement it soon.

This could mean the tech giant could switch to producing USB-C iPhones for the upcoming models by 2023.

Meanwhile, Apple Insider wrote a comparison article between USB Type-C and Lightning Port. The tech publication listed each of its pros and cons.
