POL, a Swedish startup company that wants to make electric boating last longer, has added solar panels to their watercraft, which can even turn into a camper, as reported by Electrek.

Meet the POL Lux

The first model, the POL Lux, features roof-mounted solar that will recharge its battery. As long as the sun is shining, the solar panels will continue to charge their battery.

It is built using catamaran construction with a cork deck and can fit up to 13 adults. Additionally, the boat has a large net that lets a few of them lay out over the water at the bow. The boat includes an asymmetrical driving position to offer more modular options for socially optimized seating.

Powering the Lux is a pair of electric motors that can reach maximums speeds of 11 knots. In case the batteries run out of power, the boat can still operate on solar power alone but with a reduced speed of four knots. To ensure the batteries don't run out on you, don't go over 60 nm on a charge.

As for its battery, the size is similar to what you will find in an electric motorcycle. The good thing is that its efficient design and lower top speed help sip away slowly at the battery, which can result in a decent range.

When it comes to noise, it's quieter than ICE outboard motors. Reducing the sound helps reduce the batteries between boaters and nature.

Turning Into a Camper

The POL Lux is perfect for nighttime use as well, thanks to its modular design that can be turned into a camper. Its custom tent walls off the cabin from the rain while the benches can convert into beds. The watercraft also comes with a suspended mattress that hangs like a hammock higher in the cabin for extra guests.

Earlier this year, POL tested the Lux in-water, which was a success. Now, they are already taking reservations for future owners. The price will start at 1.4 million SEK, including VAT, around $135,000.

Solar on Boats

While solar panels on boats started out as a novelty, they are becoming more popular.

Of course, solar won't be able to power everything on board a boat. Typically, that's where the auxiliary batteries come in to provide extra juice. But if you are in a sunny place, it will definitely help keep your batteries topped off.

If you are eco-friendly and have a knack for boating, the POL Lux will fit your life perfectly. The good thing about it is that it can function as a leisure boat and a camper. It also comes with better noise reduction.
