Erectile Dysfunction No More? Chinese Researchers Are Working on a Gel Treatment

As per a news story by the South China Morning Post, Chinese researchers are now developing a gel that could potentially be used to treat erectile dysfunction or shortly known as ED.

ED is a medical condition wherein men are unable to get or maintain an erection. There are various reasons why humans experience this, such as underlying medical conditions like heart disease or diabetes, according to Mayo Clinic.

On top of that, it could also be due to psychological factors. If you are experiencing immense stress or even anxiety, this medical condition might arise.

It is worth noting that millions of men are currently going through this condition, affecting their quality of life.

All that said, a group of researchers in China are currently focusing on its treatment.

The Hong Kong-based news outlet, the South China Morning Post, says that the potential treatment is in the form of a hydrogel.

How Does the Hydrogel Works?

The gel is made from a compound called glyceryl trinitrate (GTN)l. And it is pretty easy to use. To do so, it needs to be applied to the private part. From there, it should help increase the blood flow to the area, which treats the medical condition.

Although there are current treatment options like oral medication, Chinese researchers are seeking to provide a more effective approach.

Researchers want the gel they are developing to be a more effective treatment option for folks experiencing the medical condition. Not to mention that they also want it to be a more convenient option.

After all, by the looks of it, users will only have to apply the gel to increase blood flow again.

Popular Mechanics reports that it successfully worked for pigs, recent testing shows.

The study co-author, Xuetao Shi, from the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, says they were "surprised by the results of the animal testing."

Shi adds that "the penis regained normal erection immediately" during the animal testing.

When Will the Anti-Erectile Dysfunction Gel Be Available?

But it is worth mentioning that this hydrogel is still under its testing and development stage. And as such, it has yet to be available in the market.

Before doing so, it still needs to undergo stringent tests to get the approval of the relevant regulatory bodies. Besides the mere approval, the gel still needs to go through clinical trials.

Therefore, it might take some time before this new hydrogel treatment sees the light of day.
