"Robocop" was set in 2043, but 20 years earlier (which is the present world we live in), New York is introducing a new fleet of robots to aid the New York Police Department (NYPD) in making the streets safer. This New York robocop project was recently introduced by the city's law enforcement, alongside the mayor's office which co-launched it.

These robots are 400 lbs. in weight, a real heavy one that thieves cannot pick up and steal from the city, with its main objective to keep an eye on its streets to help law enforcement catch crimes and provide a record.

An inaugural video from the New York City Mayor's Office shows the introduction of a new robotic fleet that will patrol the streets of the Big Apple and help reduce crimes in the city. Mayor Eric Adams heads the launch of these new robots that will be seen in the public shortly after, introducing the New York Police Department's latest sidekick.

This project will help "revamp" the police department of the city, as crimes are still massive and its police force is seeing a hardship in keeping the peace.

According to Ars Technica, New York will employ one Knightscope K5 robot which is a cylindrical-shaped bot with a 360° camera around its body, LiDAR sensors, GPS, microphones, and speakers that can play looped messages.

400-pound Robotic Fleet in New York: What will it do?

Mayor Adams is a former NYPD captain who ran for office, and his main platform is to reduce crimes in the city. His second time in bringing robots to aid the NYPD centers on these heavy bots that will autonomously patrol the streets and help alert law enforcement should there be a crime happening.

The K5 will center on active patrol work by surveilling the streets and looking for any signs of crime or wrongdoings to report to human officers to keep the peace and ensure safety in the city.

Robots Helping Keep the Streets Safe

Apart from helping scientific discoveries or the medical field, robots were also imagined to help law enforcement agencies keep the peace and provide another veil of safety amongst the public. Back in 2021, Mayor Adams enlisted the help of Boston Dynamics to employ robot police dogs with a modified version of Spot, but was shut down due to its "aggressive tactics."

There was a similar robot that resembles what New York recently introduced over in California, one that also centers on keeping an eye on the public and providing a "Call the Police" button on its body. However, it was met with an issue after a distressed person called for officers via the robot but had no responses despite a massive fight.

Robots in the present are mostly centered on surveillance of the streets, and San Fransisco PD was the only department that employed these mechanical beings that have the license to kill people

After a failed robotic fleet over in New York, it is yet again launching a new project that will have autonomous machines patrolling the streets, to help Mayor Adams and the NYPD's goal to reduce crimes in the city.
