Federal safety regulators have invested in the deaths of 10 infants and recently found a certain link to some pillows. These pillows were then recalled, but despite that, they were still spotted being sold on Facebook Marketplace.

The Pillows were Recalled Two Years Ago but were Still Spotted on Facebook Marketplace

According to the story by ABC News, these pillows were recalled two years ago, but they recently saw it listed on Facebook Marketplace. This comes as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission named the pillows by name and that they weren't legally for sale.

The regulators specifically mentioned the Boppy Newborn Loungers and the recalled pillows and noted that they weren't legally for sale. However, they still found tens of thousands of them still being sold on Facebook Marketplace since 2021 recalls.

The agency directly wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to address the issue on Facebook, one of Meta's platforms. They note that they have made repeated requests regarding having the recalled items dropped from Facebook Marketplace, as also reported in an article by CNN.

CPSC Commissioner Commented on How No Effective Action Was Taken

The CPSC Commissioner, Richard Trumska, stated how the pillows place babies at the risk of death and that Meta didn't take any "effective action" in response to the thousands of takedown requests that the agency has made each month for the said Boppy loungers.

In September 2021, Boppy Co. recalled over three million infant pillows due to suffocation risk. So far, there have been reports of eight deaths from the company's loungers from 2015 to 2020.

The CPSC noted that there were then two baby deaths that happened just shortly after the start of the recall. The regulators urged the public to stop using the loungers because of the risk they pose to babies.

Meta Onlne Policy Prevents Promotion or Sale of Recalled Products on the Marketplace

It was noted that babies could suffocate if they roll over or place the lounger in certain positions that stop their breathing. So far, the Meta online policy notes that the Marketplace doesn't allow users to promote or sell recalled products to encourage users to look for recalls before they buy items.

Meta noted that, just like other platforms, there were still situations where people were buying and selling recalled goods despite either knowing or not knowing. The company noted that they take the issue seriously and remove listings when it violates their rules.

The CPSC has also made other takedown requests similar to the pillows on other items sold online involving recalled products. These include products like the Fisher Price Rock 'n Play sleepers, which were also in a similar situation and were linked to the death of infants.

The Boppy OPriginal Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred NMewborn Loungers, and also the Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers were among the products that were under recall after being sold nationwide through Target, Walmart, and other retailers from January 2004 to September 2021.
