Figma has unveiled a significant enhancement to its FigJam whiteboard tool, adding three new generative AI features aimed at streamlining project initiation and organization.

FigJam, an online collaborative whiteboard platform, has gained substantial traction since its launch in 2021. It is a versatile space for teams to collaborate on design projects, facilitate meetings, and brainstorm ideas. The platform utilizes a sticky note metaphor, providing an intuitive interface for users.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 20: Co-founder & CEO of Figma Dylan Field speaks onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt 2022 on October 20, 2022 in San Francisco, California.

The New FigJam of Figma

"Meet the new FigJam, now with AI features designed to help you transition from a blank page to a personalized FigJam in seconds. Generate templates for weekly team syncs, brainstorms, and reviews, or plunge into planning mode with visual timelines and organizational charts-all from a simple prompt," the company said in a press statement.

Figma's latest development aims to enhance user experience further. The new AI features are designed to seamlessly guide users from a blank canvas to a personalized FigJam in a matter of seconds.

That includes generating templates for various team activities like sync meetings, brainstorms, and reviews, as well as offering visual timelines and organizational charts; all initiated through a straightforward prompt.

These prompts, rooted in best practices and inspired by real-world use cases, cater to users at different workflow stages. They empower users to quickly set up the framework for their collaborative sessions, thus expediting the ideation process.

'Blank Canvas Problem'

Noah Levin, Vice President of Product Design of Figma, emphasized that this advancement aligns with their vision of making products not only accessible but also broadening their potential.

The features simplify tasks such as scheduling meetings and summarizing complex discussions, making the platform more user-friendly and efficient.

"At Figma, when we talk about lowering the floor and raising the ceiling, we mean creating products that are more accessible but also expand what's possible," Levin said in the statement.

The integration of AI addresses a common challenge known as the "blank canvas problem," providing an intuitive brainstorming companion that expedites the transition from ideas to actionable steps.

It aids in summarizing intricate meetings and organizing ideas and tasks that would otherwise consume a significant amount of time if done manually. Additionally, Figma acknowledges that not all users are proficient in design software.

FigJam, with integrated AI, is designed to bridge this gap, making these tools accessible and valuable to individuals across various disciplines, not limited to those with a background in design.

Meanwhile, the EU has recently opened an investigation into Adobe's planned $20 billion purchase of design rival Figma. The EU has expressed concern about the acquisition diminishing competitiveness for interactive design software and digital asset creation tools.
