BEIJING, CHINA - DECEMBER 05: U.S Vice President Joe Biden speaks at a business leader breakfast at the The St. Regis Beijing hotel on December 5, 2013 in Beijing, China.

US officials however stressed that the goal is to debunk misconceptions in the bilateral relationship and downplayed expectations for significant advancements.

Biden and Jinping will reportedly meet on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in San Francisco, while the specific meeting place of the two of the most powerful people in the world was not shared by the top administration representatives with the officials just stating that the Biden-Xi meeting will take place in the San Francisco Bay region without providing any more details.

"The two presidents will have in-depth communication on issues of strategic, overarching and fundamental importance in shaping China-U.S. relations and major issues concerning world peace and development," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, emphasizing the significance of the meeting.

US and China's Other Projected Topics

Interesting Engineering reports that Biden is also anticipated to discuss a variety of important topics aside from artificial intelligence, including fentanyl, and American detainees in China, emphasizing the importance of open channels of communication, especially in the military sphere.

The two leaders will also talk about how the US and China should "responsibly manage competition and work together where our interests align, particularly on transnational challenges that affect the international community," according to a statement released by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday.

Bloomberg also reported that along with technological limitations and military clashes in the South China Sea, Biden and Xi will also talk about Taiwan, which continues to be a major area of contention in the US-China relationship.

Biden will restate his position that the US supports peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and that the status quo should not be altered by force. It will be more challenging for Biden and US officials to comment on the matter at this time since Taiwan will pick its next president in January.

However, officials said Biden will reiterate the US's long-standing position that it opposes Taiwan's independence and caution Beijing against meddling in the island's elections.

APEC 2023

Aside from the scheduled Biden-Xi meeting, the two will also attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum that will be joined by almost 1,200 CEOs from across the world, 600 media representatives, close to 30,000 delegates, and 21 APEC Economic Leaders to represent visitors, companies, associations, and laborers from all 21 Member Economies.

China's foreign ministry said on Friday that Xi will visit San Francisco from November 14-17 for APEC meetings and to meet with Biden. Since their previous meeting on November 14, 2022, at the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Biden and Xi have not talked. After almost three and a half hours of discussion, it seemed like a less combative relationship between the two nations was on the horizon.

As per the forum's website, APEC 2023 is set to become an avenue for "business dialogue on global opportunities and challenges that are shaping economic, environmental, and societal trends in the region."
