Players of NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat 1 have found a clever workaround to avoid the game's aggressive monetization strategy, unlocking premium character skins without spending in-game currency or real money.

This exploit involves a console date change hack ala 'time travel,' allowing access to once-free cosmetic items that are now exclusively available for purchase.

Console Hack Unlocks Mortal Kombat Skins for Free

The game's seasonal model, where players can unlock skins through gameplay during a specific period, is at the center of this issue.

With the conclusion of a season, previously unlockable skins are moved to the in-game shop, accessible only through Krystals, the in-game currency that can be earned slowly or purchased with real money. However, players have discovered a loophole.

Numerous reports from sources such as Kotaku and IGN highlight how players have manipulated their console settings to alter the date, granting them access to seasonal skins previously earned through gameplay.

By reverting the console's date to a period before recent updates, completing specific in-game challenges, and restoring the present date, players have successfully retained the seasonal items without needing in-game currency or real-world purchases.

Users Confirm Console Hack

Social media posts from users on platforms like Twitter and Reddit have circulated instructions and warnings about this exploit. Reports indicate confirmation of the exploit's functionality across various gaming consoles, including PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

Twitter user iScreamFGC posted a video on Nov. 20 showcasing the exploit. By manipulating the console's date to a time before Nov. 6, completing Pyramid Mesa challenges, and then resetting the date, players can retain all the earnable items from the previous season. Redditor AdmirableEstimate258 corroborated this, confirming the exploit's effectiveness on the Nintendo Switch.

Backlash and Criticism Against Monetization

The game has faced ongoing criticism for its pricing model, with players expressing dissatisfaction over the expensive microtransactions.

The recent inclusion of previously free cosmetic items into the in-game store for purchase using premium currency sparked additional backlash, intensifying concerns about the game's monetization strategy.

Despite the outcry from the gaming community, the publisher, Warner Bros., has not issued a response to address concerns about the game's monetization approach.

Speculation looms regarding potential actions from NetherRealm Studios, with expectations of a patch or fix to eliminate the exploit and maintain the integrity of the game's economy.

This exploit is not new within the Mortal Kombat series. Similar exploits were reportedly utilized in previous iterations, showcasing a recurring challenge for the franchise regarding these hacks and their implications.
