ADNOC, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, made significant strides in 2023 with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). The company recently revealed that AI implementation resulted in a staggering $500 million in new value last year.

Reuters tells us that this substantial boost in value was achieved by deploying over 30 cutting-edge AI tools across ADNOC's entire value chain, from field operations to corporate decision-making. Notably, this innovative move also prevented up to 1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions between 2022 and 2023.

The Future of AI Technology

According to ADNOC's statement, the integration of AI tools has been pivotal in enhancing operational efficiency and facilitating smarter decision-making processes.

Sultan Al Jaber, ADNOC's group chief executive, emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting the company's commitment to securing a reliable and responsible energy supply while driving greater sustainability. "We are further integrating AI to future-proof our business and drive greater and more sustainable value from our assets and resources," Al Jaber said in a statement.

The application of AI in ADNOC's operations spans various critical areas, including production activities, reservoir management, and capacity expansion. Sophie Hildebrand, ADNOC's Chief Technology Officer, underscored the tangible benefits of these AI initiatives, such as increased automation, process optimization, and efficiency improvements across the board.

Notably, Hildebrand hinted at the continuous evolution of AI technology, expressing optimism about the potential for further value generation in the future.

AI Solutions

The successful deployment of AI at ADNOC's facilities has been made possible through collaborations with leading AI companies, including AIQ, a joint venture with Abu Dhabi-based G42. These partnerships have facilitated the development and implementation of advanced AI tools tailored to ADNOC's specific operational requirements.

Among the notable AI solutions in operation are SMARTi, an intelligent computer vision system for detecting safety hazards, and Emission X, a tool for predicting emission sources and supporting environmental sustainability efforts.

Furthermore, ADNOC's commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in its ambitious targets, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 and near-zero methane emissions by 2030. Tools like Emission X play a crucial role in supporting these objectives by providing insights into emission sources and enabling proactive mitigation measures.

Additionally, ADNOC's Centralized Predictive Analytics and Diagnostics (CPAD) program utilizes AI to monitor critical operational equipment, thereby reducing unplanned shutdowns and enhancing operational efficiency.

ADNOC's successful integration of AI technology has not only increased the value of its operations but has also made a significant contribution to environmental sustainability efforts. The company's proactive approach to harnessing AI demonstrates its dedication to innovation, efficiency, and responsible resource management in the rapidly changing energy industry.
