For many families, a trip to the pharmacy comes with more than just a copay — it comes with a financial punch. Despite having insurance, nearly 70% of prescriptions still carry a cost, according to the CDC. And for those without coverage, even basic medications can feel like luxury items, quickly turning everyday health needs into a mounting financial burden.
For example, research from KFF found that 37% of individuals taking at least four prescription medications struggle to afford their prescriptions. And 31% of adults have not taken their medication as prescribed because of cost concerns.
With prescription costs being top-of-mind for many Americans, prescription-savings services like BuzzRx can play a significant role in alleviating these worries. As Matthew Herfield, Co-Founder and CEO of BuzzRx, explained during a recent conversation, his company's ultimate goal is to redefine prescription savings.
Understanding Prescription Discount Programs
As a free prescription discount card and app service, BuzzRx offers its users savings of up to 80% off prescription medications. Specific savings amounts vary between brand-name and generic medications, as well as factors like the pharmacy location and even current supply and demand.
From the start, Herfield and his team wanted to ensure that BuzzRx would be easy to use for anyone who needed help paying for prescription medications. "There are no insurance or income requirements to qualify for BuzzRx," he explains.
"We wanted BuzzRx to be available to everyone because we know how important prescription adherence is to health and well-being. Cards, coupons, and the mobile app are pre-activated, meaning you can present them at a participating pharmacy when you pick up your prescription and get the discount right there."
BuzzRx has partnered with over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide to ensure widespread availability of its discounted prices. Participating pharmacy chains include CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, as well as grocer pharmacies at Walmart, Kroger, Publix, and others. Convenience and accessibility are foundational to fulfilling BuzzRx's primary goals.
Embracing Technology
While BuzzRx began as a provider of physical prescription savings cards, the company has significantly expanded its offerings (and capabilities) by fully embracing technology, particularly through its app and website.
"Making the prescription discount service available through an app is much more convenient for most people," Herfield says. "You don't have to worry about leaving your card at home when you go to the pharmacy, because it's right there on your phone. Even more valuable, however, the app has allowed us to introduce extra features that make it easier for users to find the best prices for their medications and stay up to date on prescriptions."
The features offered on the BuzzRx app include the ability for users to save their prescription coupons, set refill reminders, and even locate pharmacies and compare prices on an interactive map. "Because discounted rates for medications are negotiated directly with the pharmacies, the discount pricing can vary quite a bit between different retailers," Herfield explains.
"Sometimes, the price difference might just be a dollar or two. But for some prescriptions, the difference in pricing can be really significant. Finding the most affordable location near you can add up to significant savings over time."
In fact, according to BuzzRx, members who fill at least one prescription per month save an average of $1,100 per year.
Finding Ways to Give Back
Another area where BuzzRx sets itself apart in the prescription savings world is through its charitable giving initiatives. When individuals use BuzzRx.com/Giving-Back, they have the option to get a card benefitting Make-A-Wish®, the ASPCA®, the National Kidney Foundation®, or one of 15 regional food banks located across the country. Each time a BuzzRx member fills a prescription with their card, a $1 donation is made to the charity partner at no additional cost.
"Accessible prescription savings are just one way to create healthier communities," Herfield says. "By making donations to these organizations, people can choose a cause that aligns with their values and supports critical issues like food insecurity or kidney disease in their communities. To date, we've been able to donate over $11 million to these organizations, which has a very real impact on communities nationwide."
In addition to these charitable initiatives, the company recently introduced the Bee Healthy Scholarship program, which will award four $5,000 scholarships to full-time graduate or undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in healthcare.
With these initiatives, BuzzRx is able to extend its impact far beyond prescription savings, helping to lay meaningful foundations for healthier communities across the country.
Creating a Healthier Future
With its technology-powered approach that makes it easier for consumers to find the best available savings on their prescriptions, as well as an emphasis on contributing to other health and wellness causes, BuzzRx is positioning itself to be much more than a card you can present at the pharmacy.
By making prescription savings easier and more convenient than ever before, BuzzRx aims to make communities physically, emotionally, and financially healthier.
