Earlier this week, OpenAI announced the release of Sora 2, an AI video generation model alongside a social app called Sora, where users can generate videos to share on a TikTok-style feed.
Recent internal observations suggest a potential connection between OpenAI's upcoming Sora app and the emerging app known as Giggles. An acquisition, if confirmed, would align OpenAI's advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly its Sora 2 video generation model, with a social experience that has garnered attention for its innovative approach to user-generated content with a heavy focus on memes.
Giggles, co-founded by 18-year-old Justin Jin and Edwin Wang, is described as an AI-powered social entertainment app where users are encouraged to express themselves through game-like interactions and AI-generated videos. In August, the app had skyrocketed to #53 on the U.S. App Store charts.
Neither OpenAI nor Giggles responded to a request for comment.
The integration of Sora 2, OpenAI's advanced video generation AI, could provide the technological backbone for Giggles' ambitious creative tools, allowing users to manifest complex visual ideas with greater ease and sophistication.
Demonstrations of Sora have showcased complex scenes such as beach volleyball games, skateboard tricks, and gymnastics routines, where objects interact credibly within the simulated environment. A standout feature of the Sora app is its "cameos" functionality, which enables users to integrate their own likeness into any Sora-generated scene. This requires a one-time video-and-audio recording for identity verification. Furthermore, users can share their "cameos" with friends, granting permission for their likeness to be included in collaborative video creations, including multi-person scenarios.
This could represent a strategic move by OpenAI to enter the social media market. The emphasis on "vibe coding" and community-governed, decentralized platforms, as articulated by Giggles co-founder Edwin Wang in a recent Forbes piece, suggests a future for social media where AI tools empower users to create and share content on a broad scale.
Giggles would likely remain an independent entity but will assume responsibility for the social distribution of OpenAI's software products. Competing firms such as Meta and Pika have also entered this space, though recent AI social app launches have received mixed reviews.
