The artificial intelligence integration of Ubisoft continues as the French video game company has unveiled its new first-person shooter prototype title, which experiments with AI.
Ubisoft Unveils Game with Voice-Controlled AI Teammates
In the latest announcement by Ubisoft, the company unveiled a new game that they are now working on that features voice-controlled AI teammates.
According to Ubisoft, the game is currently experimental, and it is built on the Neo NPC project that Ubisoft revealed together with Nvidia at GDC 2024.
Ubisoft said that "The team behind the project aims to test the potential and limits of player interactions through natural speech, explore how generative AI can be used to enhance immersion, and test unique interactions that would not be possible without the technology."
This new team-based game will put users alongside an AI assistant-like companion that would heed their every command, and according to the team, it can understand natural language and visual context.
Through this, the AI assistant called Jaspar could respond to user commands dynamically, claiming that this machine-learning tech that would follow users around is "responsive within the story."
Alongside the AI assistant, Ubisoft also added two NPC teammates to accompany them in the game named Pablo and Sofia. They can take commands or engage in conversations with human players.
Ubisoft's New FPS Prototype Experiments on AI
The game Ubisoft developed is a first-person shooter title that takes inspiration from other action shooter titles.
Players would be thrust into the world without weapons, but the two AI companions are already armed. This would require players to immediately interact with the AI NPCs and command them to provide cover and how, when, and who to attack. Ubisoft claimed that the player's voice command would be integral to how the battle would turn out.
According to Xavier Manzanares, Director of Gameplay GenAI, the early experiments found that players were quickly connecting with the AI, Jaspar, and the assistant proved to be useful when players did not know what to do or how to progress.
Ubisoft acknowledged that the team is also aware of the scrutiny AI faces when added into games and claimed that they are not trying to "replace creatives." Instead, they want to incorporate generative AI to make it useful in a game.
Ubisoft's latest game with voice-controlled AI teammates is currently in a closed playtest, which has a few hundred players testing it out.
