Flappy Bird addicts, Sesame Street has a cure for your withdrawal symptoms. Flappy Bert is a new game that is just as addictive as Flappy Bird, but features Bert from Sesame Street.

Now you have extra incentive not to crash into the obstacles. After all, you wouldn't want to hurt Bert!

In the game Bert is carried around by a little blue bird that you must fly around the rainbow-colored pipes that populate the game's world. Every time you pass a pipe, Bert laughs, but every time you crash, Bert wails in pain, calling for Ernie to save him. Well, Ernie isn't here, so you'd better save Bert yourself. It's quite anguish-inducing, actually.

The Sesame Workshop, the creator of many Sesame Street themed games, quickly jumped on the band wagon after Flappy Bird's demise last Sunday and produced this clone app. Unlike the many malware-infected apps, Flappy Bert appears to be safe and has been created by a reputable app maker.

Flappy Bert is just as addictive as the original, but it might even be  a little bit cuter. The game is HTML-based and features bright, cheerful colors. Unlike many of the other Flappy Bird clones, this app adds Bert to the mix, making the experience more enjoyable or more torturous, depending on how well you play.

Perhaps the best thing about Flappy Bert, though, is that it's not nearly as hard as the original game. Flappy Bert is designed for kids so clearly Sesame Street is less intent on inflicting young children with feelings of intense anguish than Flappy Bird's app maker was. Of course, he claims that he took Flappy Bird down out of concern for its users' well fare. Others think it was just a publicity stunt, but so far Flappy Bird has remained banished from the iOS and Android app stores.

In the meantime, clone apps continue to pop up everywhere.

Because of eBay's tight rules about only selling wiped smartphones, you can't exactly buy a used iPhone with Flappy Bird installed, so you're left sifting through clone apps to feed your addiction. If you're going to play a clone app, though, make sure you know its a legitimate app and not one filled with malware. Flappy Bert is a good option and its a bit more wholesome than the original.
