Apple has released the public beta version of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, which allows for the public to test the much-anticipated Photos app that comes with the update.

The public beta of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, officially named as build 14D87p, is made available to all users that signed up for the free OS X Beta Program. The update is now ready to be downloaded for all public beta testers.

Apple has advised that beta testers should be installing the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 beta version on a computer or a partition that users are willing to wipe out if needed. In addition, beta testers are advised to prepare a backup for their Mac computers whenever installing and trying out beta software.

Many users are anticipating OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 because this is the version where the new Photos app will be introduced, replacing the outdated iPhoto app.

The Photos app is able to organize the photo library of the user and includes comprehensive image editing tools that users can access. Through the new app, users are also given the ability to upload their pictures and videos to the cloud through the iCloud Photo Library, allowing access to the content from any of the user's Apple devices.

According to Apple, features of the new Photos app include browsing pictures by location and time through Moments, Collections and Years views, navigating image libraries using tabs, uploading content into the iCloud Photo Library without affecting format and resolution, editing pictures through tools and controls with varying levels of convenience and precision, creating high-quality picture books and purchasing prints in different sizes.

Developers have been testing the beta Photos app since it was first announced last month. The app brings a new interface to OS X systems similar to the Photos app used in iPhones and iPads, and is expected to be launched to the general public this spring.

Users that have signed up for the OS X Beta Program will be able to download OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 under the Updates tab of the Mac App Store. Users that are interested in joining the program can still do so by visiting the programs' website and signing up using their Apple ID.

Upon being presented with the potential problems that users testing out beta software can experience and agreeing with the terms, users are required to download and install software that registers the user's system under the beta program.
