Sailing the seven seas on a pirate ship is hard work, but after 4 movies, there clearly is no stopping Captain Jack Sparrow. That is, until Johnny Depp, the 51 year old actor who plays the unconventional pirate, had to be flown out to get surgery on his hand.

While the production for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was filming in Australia's Gold Coast over the weekend, Depp had to be flown back to the U.S. for surgery on his hand for an injury that occurred off the set. The production is already one month into filming but they expect that their schedule will not be delayed too much by Depp's absence.

Although he was apparently not injured while filming, Depp is no stranger to on-set accidents. On the set of 2011's On Stranger Tides, Depp said his back had electrifying sciatic pain after doing some of his stunts which made him limp for a while.

Understandably, Depp normally doesn't do most of his own stunt work, saying in the past that he "prefers they pull in for the close up and leave that jumping about to the professionals."

Even though he leaves the more dangerous stunts to his trusty doubles, Depp has had a few scares. He reportedly was thrown off his horse while filming The Lone Ranger in 2013 and was nearly trampled on. Fortunately, he did not suffer any major injury and walked away with a horseshoe shaped bruise on his back. Ouch!

Even director Gore Verbinski, was shaken at the accident. "That was one of the scariest moments ever. Simple things in Westerns are incredibly dangerous. I have such respect for the actors and stuntmen and directors. It's really hard to make these movies because they are very dangerous," he said.

Injuries with such a physical action movie like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are no joke. Even Tony Angelotti, who was a stunt double for Depp in Dead Man's Chest, posted a video of himself during rehearsal where he said he was nearly killed.

Although no details about the extent of his current injury have been revealed or even the circumstances behind the accident, the show must go on! Filming for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales continues and the crew will work around scenes that don't require Depp while he recuperates.

The release date for the movie also remains the same, so be prepared to set sail once again with Captain Jack Sparrow on July 7, 2017.
