Fans of The X-Files never stopped believing, and thanks to them, the series is returning to television as a six-episode series event.

Fox made the announcement today, citing that the popular sci-fi drama would return to the network, with production beginning this summer.

It has been 13 years since the last episode of The X-Files, although the series also spawned two movies, the last of which came out in 2008.

Returning to the series is creator and executive producer Chris Carter, along with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who will reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Also, the series original production companies, 20th Century Fox TV and Ten Thirteen Prods, are back for the series new run.

"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," says Carter. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

The X-Files is about two FBI special agents who investigate unexplained cases, most of which involve paranormal activity.

The show debuted in 1993 and went on to become a hit, airing for a consecutive nine seasons, making it one of the longest running sci-fi programs on American television.

Fans have loudly demanded more of the series, including a #Xfiles2015 hashtag on Twitter in support of bringing the series back. The overwhelming response got Fox's attention, and rumors of the series returning have surfaced since. In January, Fox stated that it was in discussions about bringing the series back, dependent on the availability of Carter, Anderson and Duchovny.

"We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files - one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers," says Fox TV Group chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman. "The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture - yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning."

The plot of the new The X-Files hasn't yet been unveiled, and it's likely it will be a heavily guarded secret.

Meanwhile, fans of the series are also demanding more movies, although this television event should placate those just wanting to see more of Scully and Mulder.

Revisiting older cult series has become a trend in Hollywood. Not only is The X-Files returning, but other series are also seeing resurrection, such as Twin Peaks and Heroes.
