There she was — sitting silently on the shelf, regarding the room with her beady blue eyes. Watchful. Silent. Bemused.

Her shrill laugh pierced the stillness of the night, startling Mary awake. Just inches from the girl's face, the doll stared deep into Mary's eyes — then flailed her arms in the air and cackled, before walking herself back to her cozy corner on the shelf.

This is not a true story, but – if you're the owner of a derelict doll reminiscent of Chucky in "Child's Play" – it could well be. If you've been looking to get rid of the creepy thing, then you're in luck. The market for haunted dolls has never looked more promising!

That's right — haunted dolls are hot property. People are apparently willing to shell out plenty of money for the toys online, with massive demand from the collector's market.

Recently, a listing on eBay for a "nasty perverse possessed doll" sold for $1,500, as reported by Vice.com. The eBay seller claimed the haunted doll had negative vibes and was "sexually abusive" to other dolls in the owner's collection.

Jak Hutchcraft, author of the Vice article, said he happened upon the advert while looking around in eBay's "Everything Else" section.

So what is it that propels an individual to purchase these dolls? The idea of connecting with the spirit supposedly possessing the doll — or just a desire to collect... unique dolls?

"When you own a spirited doll or item, you can do sessions in your own home whenever you want," said Katrin Reedik, a self-proclaimed haunted doll lover in Glasgow, Scotland. "They can be companions, friends and teachers. They can teach you a lot about death, afterlife and more. One day you may discover your mediumistic skills as a result of connecting with spirit dolls."

Reedik has nearly 22 haunted dolls in her collection.

For those wondering what it is that makes a seemingly lifeless object pulsate with life, believers suggest that spirits with unfinished business often possess these dolls. (Sort of like Chucky.) As long as they don't try anything funny, I suppose haunted doll collectors or the brave souls who wish to own them don't have much to worry about!

But as to those willing to pay absurd amounts of money to acquire a genuine haunted doll, the chance of one getting duped and falling into the trap of fraudsters always exists.

If you still fancy getting yourself a haunted doll, then head over to eBay and bid away!
