Samsung is set to release the Galaxy S6 very soon with a radically different design compared to the Galaxy S5.

Along with the beautiful new design comes a coating of Corning's Gorilla Glass 4. Corning suggests that this is the strongest Gorilla Glass ever made, able to withstand more than a beating.

Many, however, chalked this claim up to marketing. But could it really be as strong as the company says it is? A newly released video seems to think so.

The video essentially shows a user with a Galaxy S6 Edge, the curved display version of the Galaxy S6, smashing the device against the ground. Surprisingly, the device seems to come out of the ordeal more or less unscathed. While the video is a little too blurry to see if there are any scratches at all, the user shows that the device is still working properly and there is no obvious damage.

This seems to be a testament to how strong Gorilla Glass 4 really is. While this is probably one of those "don't try this at home" experiments, if you are worried what will happen if you accidentally drop your shiny new Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, you can breathe a little easier.

While the new version of Gorilla Glass seems to be extremely tough, that hasn't always been the case. Gorilla Glass 3 and previous versions were able to withstand some drops, but depending on the angle of the drop users would still be in trouble. This led Apple to turn to another glass manufacturer for the iPhone 6, with the intent to use glass made with sapphire, which is much stronger. The deal eventually fell through and Apple stuck with Gorilla Glass for the iPhone 6.

The fact that Gorilla Glass 4 seems to be so strong could mean that Apple won't even need to consider other options.

Gorilla Glass 4 does not make use of sapphire, but Corning has announced that it is experimenting with the material through Project Phire. The idea is that the company is looking for completely scratch-resistant glass, with it being likely that the company might include sapphire in Gorilla Glass 5.

Gorilla Glass 4 will be featured on many phones going forward, making the Galaxy S6 not the only device with the new glass' super strength. It will, however, help convince those worried about Samsung's shift from plastic to glass, and whether that could mean a device that breaks more easily.
