If there's one Pixar movie that doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves, it's The Incredibles. Sure, movies like Up and Toy Story tug on our heartstrings, but people seem to forget that The Incredibles was a better superhero movie than many of the big budget action flicks that Marvel and DC have produced over the years.

It was a movie that did exactly what it set out to do: The Incredibles was a tale of a superhero redeeming himself, all wrapped up in a Silver Age setting. It was a huge change of pace for Pixar, and is unlike anything the studio has made since.

However, while Cars has received a number of sequels and spin-offs, The Incredibles has been largely ignored.

The characters would occasionally pop up as part of any given Disney collaboration, but it wasn't until last year that a proper sequel was announced - and even then, work on the script hadn't even started.

Well, that changes today: director Brad Bird has announced that early script work on The Incredibles 2 has just begun.

Before anyone gets excited, don't expect to watch The Incredibles 2 anytime soon. This isn't a movie that's been worked on behind-the-scenes while other projects soak up the spotlight - Brad Bird has only just started working on the script, meaning that fans are still years away from seeing the film on the big screen. To quote the director himself:

"I'm just staring to write it, so we'll see what happens."

While it's true that fans have known about a sequel to The Incredibles since last year, no other details about the project were given. Bird has been working on Disney's Tomorrowland for some time now, but with work on the film wrapping up, it seems that Bird now has time for The Incredibles 2.

So far, Pixar has really hit it out of the park when it comes to sequels (Cars doesn't count, seeing as it's just a 90-minute commercial) - both Toy Story sequels were amazing, and Monsters University was a surprisingly above-average prequel. If Bird and Pixar can catch that Incredibles lightning in a bottle a second time, fans may finally have the sequel they've been waiting over a decade for.

The Incredibles 2 is still a long ways off - don't expect the movie anytime before 2017.
