Bryan Singer is hard at work on the latest installment of his X-Men series for Fox, and already there is plenty of exciting news spreading across the web. From our first look at Jubilee to the introduction of a new, younger Nightcrawler, it's a great time to be a fan of the X-Men.

But might the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse be the last film in Singer's X-Men universe?

A new rumor suggests yes. Umberto Gonzalez (formerly of Latino-Review.com) reports that X-Men: Apocalypse and the third standalone Wolverine film will be the last two entries in the Singer X-Men universe.

"Makes sense since Hugh Jackman also said Wolverine 3 will be his last film playing Logan," Gonzalez says. "The end of an era."

It certainly sounds like it could be true. A film with "Apocalypse" in the title certainly carries with it a sense of finality that would be a great sendoff for the series Singer started back in 2000. The events of Wolverine: Origins and X-Men 3: The Last Stand left a sour taste in the mouth of many fans, but Singer seems to have swept away much of the continuity from those films with the brilliantly executed Days of Future Past.

Doing so looked like an attempt to clear the way for X-Men films for years to come, no longer shackled by the unpopular character deaths and questionable plot points. But perhaps Singer simply wanted to clean up the film universe he created before sending it off with a bang.

No matter what Singer has in store, it is certain to be exciting. Concept art for the film shows Angel trapped in a cage at what looks to some kind of freak show, and the very idea that we will get to see a young Cyclops and Jean Grey is enough to send many an X-fan over the moon. X-Men: Apocalypse lands in theaters May 27, 2016.
