Tom Hiddleston fans might be upset when they go see Avengers: Age of Ultron. Why? Because everyone's favorite crazy alien, aka Loki, is not in the film.

And now we know why: Loki's one scene ended up on the editing room floor.

That probably makes many of you sad, but director Joss Whedon explains that there was a very good reason for leaving Loki out in a recent interview with MTV.

In that interview, MTV brings up that last year, actor Idris Elba promised that both he and Hiddleston would reprise their roles as Heimdall and Loki in Age of Ultron. Although Elba does appear in the final film, Hiddleston does not.

According to Whedon, Elba "misspoke." However, Hiddleston did shoot something for the movie that didn't make it into the final cut.

"We did shoot something," says Whedon. "And it didn't play. The movie has so much. It's so filled. We didn't want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus."

Hiddleston fans would disagree, but now that Age of Ultron is in theaters, there isn't much they can do about it.

Hiddleston became a popular actor due to his success as playing Loki in Thor, Thor: The Dark World and the first The Avengers film. Most fans of the Marvel movies expected he would at least put in an appearance in Age of Ultron, so this probably comes as a surprise to those going to the film expecting at least a small shot of Hiddleston in that green costume with horns.

However, it doesn't seem that the missing Loki is affecting Age of Ultron's box office sales: the film scored the largest midnight opening ever last night when it took in an estimated $27.6 million.

It also seems that other controversies surrounding the film aren't affecting it, including some slut-shaming of Black Widow by film stars Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner, as well as Marvel leaving Black Widow out in most of its merchandising.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is now in theaters.
