One thing that Star Trek fans always wonder about is the story of Captain Pike, the captain of the Enterprise before Kirk.

Now, a group of fans want to put together a film telling Pike's story, and they have help from a lot of familiar Star Trek faces, including Robert Picardo, Walter Koenig, Linda Park, Ray Wise and Chase Masterson.

"This is the story of Captain Pike when he first takes command of the Enterprise and his first mission aboard her," writes the film's creators on their Kickstarter page. "And with your help, it will lead into a 90 minute Captain Pike film or Web Series.

For those unfamiliar with Captain Pike, he served as captain of the Enterprise in just one episode of Star Trek, the pilot, called "The Cage." However, the series recast Jeffrey Hunter's role and put William Shatner in the captain's seat instead and named him Captain Kirk. The rest, as they say, is history.

Pike did appear in another episode of Star Trek, though, portrayed by actor Sean Kenney. The character also appears as Bruce Greenwood in the J.J. Abrams-helmed Star Trek films as Captain Kirk's mentor.

But his story is still unknown, so a group of fans want to raise funds to create a film based on Pike's early years as captain of the Enterprise. The film aims to explore what happened to Pike on his first mission, if he ever went into battle and if he ever met other alien species.

In the fan film, Ray Wise takes on the role of Pike. Wise is best known for his roles on Reaper, Twin Peaks, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager.

Most impressively, the film recently announced that the original Star Trek series' own Checkov has signed up as co-writer on the project.

The Kickstarter currently has around $25,000 in donations of its $112,000 goal. With just 13 days to go, it's hoping to fund the first part of Pike's story, a prequel to the feature film called "Encounter at Rigel."

For those interested in donating to the project (and getting some cool perks like exclusive DVDs, posters, t-shirts and even a replica of Captain Pike's tunic), you can do so on the official Captain Pike Kickstarter page.
