If you have set up a Twitter account but you either forgot about it or haven't managed to send a tweet yet, you're apparently not alone.

While Twitter undeniably has a large number of users, about 974 million to date, it appears that a sizeable number of these users have not used their account yet which suggests that although the microblogging site has no problem enticing people to sign up for an account, it actually has difficulty getting people to use the service.

A website that provides analysis and statistics on Twitter data reported that nearly half of Twitter users do not at all share thoughts and information on the social networking site. Twopcharts, a third party site that monitors Twitter account activities, said that of the social network's approximate 974 million existing users, 44 percent have never sent a tweet since creating their account.

The data translates to roughly 429 million Twitter users that have never tweeted a word since creating their account. It is likely that some of these users created an account and forgot about it or didn't know how to use the social networking site. There are users, for instance, who find it difficult to use the site with its 140-character post limit. Some may not be interested in tweeting but are rather interested in reading news or tweets from other users.

Still, it appears that the Twitter community is not really as active as it looks. Twopcharts reported that of the 550.4 million and counting Twitter users that have sent a tweet, an estimate of 236.9 million have sent their latest tweet over a year ago and only 41.1 million roughly have actually sent a tweet in the last eight to 30 days.

Twopcharts added that only 30 percent of Twitter users have sent at least one to ten tweets, and only 13 percent have actually managed to send at least 100 tweets.

If you think you're so unpopular because you only got three or five friends who follow your updates on twitter, don't worry. Twopcharts' data show that there are about 391 million Twitter accounts that do not have any follower and only 500,000 of the nearly one billion existing Twitter users are popular enough to have at least 10,000 followers.

Twitter did not issue any comment on Twopcharts' report.
